Closing Eye

In my last Eye entry, it seems fitting to pay homage to one of the most visually memorable characters of the last ten years, The Pale Man from Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth.

Del Toro’s visual style, be it in the Hell Boy movies or The Devil’s Backbone, is stunning. He’s like Jim Hensen taken to the next level. Especially amazing are his monsters, whether they be heroes or the stuff of nightmares. When I first saw Pan’s Labyrinth, it was not just the plot that stayed with me–the beautiful and terrible fairytale juxtaposed with the atrocities of war–it was the images. One of the strongest of those visuals was the Pale Man seated at the feast, seemingly sightless until his long fingers uncurl to reveal eyes. Scary? Absolutely. But in some way, like all the Del Toro monsters, there is something arresting and poetic in the images. If you haven’t seen this 2006 film, do yourself a favor and check it out, especially if you enjoy surrealism. Just be wary of the stitching scene.

On another topic, when I joined the NaBloPoMo at the beginning of September, I honestly didn’t know how I would make it blogging every day. It’s been challenging in terms of topics and making time in my day, but it’s been rewarding in more ways.

The visual aspect of my posts has always suffered. I was just telling someone yesterday that I’m a writer not an artist, despite having some experience with art history. Because of the nature of the challenge, I found including images critical which I think helped up my traffic.

My posts have, for the most part, been shorter. I can certainly be long-winded and I think some brevity would much benefit me. Above all of that, blogging has become part of my daily routine. I’m not saying I’ll stay daily forever, for now I’m digging it.

As you can see by the sidebar, I’m re-upping for October. I hadn’t planned to, but MASK is such a provocative topic–psychological, silly, sexy–who knows where it will take me?

Thanks to those who have liked and followed. I heart you all! October is also going to be a bit of a membership drive here on Generation Cake. On October 9 I’ll be posting information about a giveaway for my followers and Facebook fans. No, I’m not going sponsored–that’s not my bag. However, I have awesome stuff for some lucky followers including eco products, upcycled items, and a mystery prize to be revealed later. Tempted? Follow or Like today!
